How Employers can Help Staff Green Their Commute 365 Days a Year

Earth Day sees more than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries working together to actively raise environmental awareness through ‘green’ events and projects. This is a great occasion for workplaces to start promoting year round action on issues that affect our health, communities and environment.

Recycling, garbage clean-up, and tree planting are common workplace activities in going green – but did you know that your choice of transportation is one of the most powerful tools you have in making a difference? In fact roughly 50% of your personal Greenhouse Gas emissions, contributing to climate change, come from your daily drive to work.  With over 75% of employees regularly commuting daily to work alone by car, workplaces have an important role to play in helping employees ‘green’ their commute year round.

‘Smart Commute’ is both a movement and an organization.  The movement encourages individuals to adopt green options for commuting to work such as cycling, walking, transit, and carpooling. The organization engages workplaces to act as agents of change through customized transportation programs for their employees.  Workplace programs empower individuals to reduce their eco-footprint and build their social network, improve health and well-being, and save on transportation costs.  Employers benefit from a more competitive hiring package, greater productivity and team-building with happier and healthier employees, reduced parking infrastructure costs, and many other related advantages.

With the right tools, change doesn’t have to be costly. This Earth Day go beyond the ordinary by encouraging litter-free lunches, going paperless, and forming carpools or lunchtime walking groups – and keep up the green momentum year round.
