About Smart Commute NTV

Smart Commute – North Toronto, Vaughan (NTV) is an award winning non-profit organization. Our tailored sustainable transportation programs help commuters Travel Smarter. Cleaner. Better. by providing workplace-based support, such as carpool-matching and employee vanpool programs, as well as a variety of incentives to walk, cycle and take transit.  Established in 2001 as the first Transportation Management Association (TMA) in Ontario, the organization now operates two TMA projects: Smart Commute - North Toronto, Vaughan (NTV) and Smart Commute - Northeast Toronto (NET).

The organization works with a range of leading employers and property managers, from the fields of health care and manufacturing, to universities and consultants.  On behalf of our many partners, we represent approximately 90,000 employees, students, and volunteers.

Together with our partners, members and supporters, we work to:

  • implement dynamic sustainable/green commuting programs at workplaces
  • decrease traffic congestion and improve air quality and health by preventing harmful vehicle emissions
  • improve employee productivity and morale, and reduce employee turnover
  • support improvements of local and regional transportation infrastructure such as high-occupancy vehicle lanes, bus-only lanes and cycling lanes, and a wider network of rapid transit
  • promote the benefits of transit-supportive development and smart-growth strategies
  • encourage legislative flexibility in support of high-value, cost effective transportation strategies such as vanpools, telework, transit subsidies and shuttle services
  • increase opportunities for collaboration between business, government and NGOs

In 2007-08, Smart Commute NTV and NET and their partners collectively prevented 300,000 Single Occupancy Vehicle Trips and 14 million Vehicle Kilometres Travelled.  These actions avoided 3000 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Smart Commute NTV and NET function as part of a broader network of TMAs across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area called the Smart Commute Initiative (SCI). The strength of the SCI is its ability to operate across jurisdictions, recognizing that traffic congestion is not restricted by regional boundaries. The project involves the coordinating body, Smart Commute at Metrolinx, and TMAs that work with employers in geographically specific areas.  Many of these TMAs are based on the model first piloted by Smart Commute NTV.
