Smart Commute – North Toronto, Vaughan (NTV) is an award-winning non-profit Transportation Management Association (TMA) committed to reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality and advocating for sustainable transportation.

Together with its partners, Smart Commute NTV helps raise awareness of sustainable commuting options and encourages actions that foster healthier and more prosperous communities.  Smart Commute NTV collaborates with its many partners to:

  • Implement trip reduction programs.

  • Decrease traffic congestion, and improve air quality and health.

  • Improve local infrastructure and transit accessibility by advocating for sustainable transportation.

  • Encourage transit-supportive development and province-wide smart-growth strategies.

  • Increase opportunities for TMA collaboration with businesses, NGOs, institutions, and governments.

   

 

GTA Faces Transportation-Related Challenges 

As a community, the GTA is experiencing worsening smog, traffic congestion and consequential negative health, economic and environmental effects that result in large part from single-occupant vehicle commuting.

  • An estimated 85% of GTA commuters drive to work alone, creating congestion and intensifying poor air quality.

  • In Toronto, there is an estimated 6,000 hospitalizations and 1,700 premature deaths per year due to poor air quality (Toronto Public Health).

  • It is estimated that by 2021, traffic ‘gridlock’ will cost the GTA economy approximately $3 billion per year in lost time, productivity and wasted fuel (Toronto Board of Trade).

  • Transportation is the 2nd largest source of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, and 49.9% of a vehicle owner’s personal GHG emissions are due to transportation.

  • By 2021, a 55% increase is expected in vehicle travel in the GTA (MTO).
